How Spotify is helping today’s female vocal composers

The medium of streaming recorded music has greatly affected the rise of female composers of vocal music. Female composers are able to have recordings of their music created today with whoever is interested in recording them, and that includes many independent artists who are somewhat outside the “traditional” pathway to commercial success or widespread recognition in the arts, i.e. smaller or simply untraditional venues and creative spaces vs. large performing arts organizations which are based primarily in a large concert hall. One might argue that with so many larger organizations having a harder time than ever in selling their subscription series to concert goers, an audience that is more and more digitally based creates more favorable conditions for female composers whose networks and/or reknown may not include those older, larger arts organizations. Ideally, female composers may take advantage of both the new and old pathways to having their music heard.

Online streaming services like Spotify help female composers immediately connect and share their work with interested musicians and those with other shared interests. As for myself, I came to Spotify as a part of my contract with my recording engineer and I have enjoyed the partnership because of the unique and “free for all” feeling of the Spotify experience.  I’ve always wanted to create music for people from all walks of life, not only those who could afford to attend a concert at an elite performance venue. I also appreciate that Spotify recommends albums to its listeners, meaning that my work can be shared with listeners who might not otherwise have sought me out by name but are intrigued by the musical content of the album.

I have really enjoyed discovering new music on Spotify, and keeping track of the number of monthly listeners of my own album. Whenever I mention my album on Spotify to friends or family it receives a positive response and leads me to believe that the experience of listening to my music on Spotify will likely be a positive one.

Spotify suggests music to listeners based on their previous listening choices, so if a female composer specializes in a certain genre or sets texts that deal with certain subject matter, she has a great opportunity to reach audiences more quickly by maximizing the audience who might listen to her work.  Spotify also keeps track of which album tracks receive the most play, so over time female composers can learn which of their compositions are trending and perhaps draw conclusions about what other vocal works might reach a wide audience of listeners on Spotify in the future.
